Laurie Giordano drives systematic change for heat-stroke prevention through Zach Martin Foundation
Aloia, Roland, Lubell & Morgan, PLLC senior partners and lead attorneys, Ty Roland and Evan Lubell reached a settlement agreement with the School Board of Lee County. This evening, The School Board of Lee County unanimously voted to approve a $950,000 settlement and the creation of an annual memorial football game aimed to promote heat stroke prevention. A portion of the proceeds from the annual football game will benefit the Zach Martin Memorial Foundation.
“In the legal field, it is rare to see systematic change happen this quickly. It is generally uncommon to negotiate with defendants who are willing to adapt to much-needed change,” said Ty Roland, Aloia Roland senior partner and co-counsel for Laurie Giordano.
Despite the heartbreak that lives on within the Giordano family, and many other families who have lost a loved one to heat stroke, the changes established by Laurie Giordano’s efforts are significant. Giordano, and her army of advocates and supporters, helped advanced legislative changes in the State of Florida. The law mandating cooling protocol best practices for high school student athletes went into effect July 1, 2020 after being signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis.
“Standing beside Laurie at the Florida State Capitol in February was one of the most rewarding experiences in my 25-year legal career. Meeting Senator Keith Perry and learning that he proposed naming the law, ‘The Zachary Martin Act’ made our collective efforts that much more meaningful – especially now that I’ve learned the law has already saved students within the state of Florida this year alone,” said Evan Lubell, Aloia Roland senior partner and Giordano’s attorney.
Tomorrow morning on Wednesday, December 9, 2020, Laurie Giordano will speak at a press conference and share her reaction to the vote, and address her plans for the future. To follow the ongoing developments with the story, visit LawDefined.com/ZachMartin.
